Key Items are special items that can only be obtained once, and are often necessary for the completion of quests or to access new areas. These items can not be disposed or traded to other players.

Quest items
Attack/Defence Scroll
These two scrolls are obtained by completing the quiz at the Fighting Dojo located within Saffron City. For the Attack Scroll, you will need to choose legs as your attack preference for the final answer in the quiz. For the Defence Scroll, you need to choose arms as your attack preference for the final answer. Each scroll allows you to access a different side of the Splitting River Reserve (Attack to the left, Defence to the right). On the left side, players can find Hitmonlee. On the right side, players can find Hitmonchan.
Wild Mushroom
Feeds these to the Digglets in Diggelets Cave B2F and you'll have a chance to obtain a Shiny Rock. With 5 Shiny rocks, you'll be able to leave Digglets Cave B2F.
Train Pass/Transportation Tickets
A Transportation Ticket or a Train Pass is required to board the Train. These can be sold by ticket sellers, found in any of the 5 train stations; each Transportation Ticket has a 1-time use, whereas the Train Pass is infinitely reusable for 30 days - thereafter its expiration time, it would need to be renewed.
Unexpendable Key Items
Bicycles
At a cost of $500,000 - the Bicycle allows you to ride around most towns rather than choosing to walk. You can buy it from either Cerulean City or Goldenrod City. Riding the Bicyle requires an Earth Badge from Viridian City (if Kanto is your starting region) or a Rising Badge from Blackthorn City (if Johto is your starting region).
Riding the Bicycle allows you to move at proper speed in both directions when on Route 17 (Cycling Road); and also slightly speeds up movement in other areas.
Old Rod
For the cost of $10,000 you could be fishing around the waters of Kanto and Johto for Pokémon that are only catchable in the water. You can check your fishing level by clicking on the "Trainer" button on the client. It's available to buy from Vermilion City in Kanto, or in the Pokemon Center on Route 32 in Johto. Wind Surfboard
At a cost of $200,000 - the surfboards allows you to ride the waves. You can either buy it from Route 19 in Kanto or Olivine City in Johto.
Badges
Can be obtained by defeating gym leaders of their respective cities. Used to gain access to other cities/towns.

Other items
Kanto/Johto Passport
You collect your Kanto or Johto Passport when coming from Starters Island. The passport is used to help decide what level gym leaders you face. Only one passport can be obtained, for the starting region you depart to. They are also required to begin the Viridian Forest Clearing and Hidden Crag mini-quests in their respective regions.
